Four Tips for Office Security
Most retail stores spend a lot of time and energy planning their security set-ups. However, many offices don’t put this same focus on security. This is generally a mistake. Even if you have an office where the general public doesn’t visit very often, that doesn’t mean that you don’t need to ensure that your property is kept safe and secure.
Here are a few office security tips that will help you.
Security is Everyone’s Responsibility
One of the main things to remember is that office security isn’t just the responsibility of one or two people. The entire office and all of the staff should be concerned with security. One important task that every staff member can focus on is ensuring that strangers and unknown persons are greeted as soon as they are noticed. This includes service people and anyone wearing a uniform. Sometimes criminals will dress as delivery people or maintenance staff in an attempt to sneak into a property. Sometimes this is done to commit a crime. In other cases it is done to get a closer look at the location for a crime that the person is attempting to commit later.
All visitors to your office should be greeted at reception and given a visitors badge to identify them. If any staff member notices a stranger who is not wearing such as badge, they should immediately ask this person who they are and if they can help them. This is prevent criminals from sneaking around the office unnoticed and keep your office more secure.
Proper Lighting is Crucial
Installing lighting in and around your office is crucial. You may not be able to make decisions regarding the lighting around your office if you are in a larger building but, if possible, you should certainly ensure that there is proper lighting installed. There are many reasons for this.
First of all, lighting makes it easier to catch activity on security cameras. Second of all, lighting makes it more difficult for criminals to hide. This means that they can’t easily hide outside your office and tamper with your security system under the cover of darkness. It also means that your staff will be safer when they leave your office as lighting reduces the chances of someone lurking in the darkness with bad intentions.
Keep Valuables Locked Away
This includes purses, wallets, cell phones, laptops and other types of valuables. Leaving them out in the open increases the likelihood of them being stolen. For valuables that can’t be locked up (desktop computers, printers, etc.) take steps to keep them behind locked doors whenever possible. You can also secure these valuables by using secure cables and locks to make it nearly impossible to move computers away from their assigned positions.
Use Security Gates
Security gates have a number of purposes in an office. They can be used to protect server rooms, supply rooms and a number of other sensitive areas. You can also use security gates to secure doors and windows. One of the main benefits of security gates is that they can easily be rolled back during office hours, ensuring that your location stays accessible and aesthetically-pleasing to visitors and staff.
