Securing Your Company’s Data

The Importance of Protecting Your Company’s Data

When you’re coming up with your business security plan, you’re likely determining ways that you can protect your merchandise, secure any cash that is in the building and safeguard the many other assets of your company. However, have you thought about your company’s data? This is a huge asset that definitely needs to be protected.

Think about it. How would it impact your business if you lost your client lists? Or your financial information? Or your marketing plans? Obviously this would have a huge effect on your company in both the short- and long-term. Some organizations might not be able to survive without their critical data. So what can you do to protect this information? Here are a few tips.

Always Back-Up

Today, it’s easier than ever to quickly back-up all of your important information. However, many individuals and companies still don’t do it. Always keep a second copy of all critical information and make sure that this copy is stored far away from the original. If possible, take your back-ups off-site. This way if, for example, there is a fire at your main location, you still have a copy of your critical data stored somewhere else.

Install Physical Protection

A criminal may or may not realize that they’re stealing or damaging your critical data when they break into your location and steal your computers. He or she may just want the physical computers. However, your data would go with them as well, which could potentially be disastrous for your company. You’ll need to take steps to physically protect the computers, hard drives and other devices that contain critical data.

The first step is protecting your property overall. You likely have some sort of security protection installed at your office or store, but adding physical protection is critical to keeping criminals out. Adding security gates to your doors and windows lets criminals know that your property is protected. It also makes it significantly more difficult for them to gain access to your location.

Expandable security gates can be hidden during business hours so that your property will continue to look inviting to customers and clients. You can then secure these gates at closing time to create a visible deterrent and a physical barrier that prevents access to your property.

Protect Your Server Room

You will also want to consider installing security gates as a matter of access control. Server rooms and other rooms that contain computer equipment are common targets for criminals. When securing your property, you’ll want to keep in mind not only people who attempt to break in after hours, but also those who individuals who are on your property during working hours.

Since they contain such sensitive data, server rooms should only be accessible to those who need this access. Clients, the general public and other employees should not be allowed to access the server room or server area for security reasons.

To protect your server room, you can use retractable security gates to restrict access. You can then provide those employees who require access to the server area with keys to these gates. Not only does this prevent unauthorized access, but you’ll be able to effectively control who can access this sensitive area with ease.

By following the tips listed above, you’ll be able to protect and secure your company’s valuable data, which will ensure that your critical documents won’t disappear or end up in the wrong hands.
