New Year’s Resolutions to Improve Security in 2015

Security New Year’s Resolutions

2014 is coming to an end, and that that means we’re approachingquantum road ahead 2015 the time of year when many people start thinking about their New Year’s resolutions. While a lot of people make personal resolutions, many also make business resolutions. These resolutions don’t have to just include goals for profits, sales and other business metrics. They also include goals for improving your business in the New Year.

One of the best ways that you can improve your business is by strengthening your security. Protecting your retail store, warehouse, office or other business location is crucial to preventing loss and damage that can cost you a great deal of time, money and emotional distress.

Here are some suggestions for security New Year’s resolutions that you can make for 2015.

Resolve to Use Secure Passwords

Are you still using “Password” as your login for your computer? This is potentially a big security weakness. In 2015, resolve to use a more secure password for your computer and all of your devices. You’ll also want to make sure that you institute this policy across your entire organization.

You may not think that anyone would be interested in hacking the computers at your office, retail store or warehouse, but you’d be wrong. In 2014 we saw how data breaches at Target, Home Depot, Staples and many other retailers caused serious problems so it’s crucial that you focus on passwords and information security in 2015, no matter who you are.

Resolve to Review your Security Policies

When was the last time you updated your company’s security policy? Are all of employees aware of your policy? Do they all know what to do if they see a security weakness or breach, for example? These are important questions that need to be answered.

In 2015, make a point to review your company security policy and take the time to ensure that all of your employees are aware of the policy and that they understand it.

Resolve to Check for Security Weaknesses

Recently we talked about the importance of reviewing security plans regularly. This isn’t just important for those managing warehouses. It’s crucial for just about everyone.

In 2015, look around your business property with the eyes of a criminal. Think about how you would break into your own property if you needed to and then take steps to secure these weaknesses.

Resolve to Improve Physical Security

Do you have appropriate physical security installed at your location? Whether you’re a retail store, warehouse, office or any other type of organization, placing a focus on physical security is paramount. Yes, alarm systems, surveillance cameras and other types of security technology are important, but it’s also crucial that you take steps to make it more difficult to access your property in the first place. Layer different types of security is one of the keys to keeping a property safe.

Smash and grab robberies are common at nearly every type of business. An alarm system can alert you to a smash and grab robbery and a security camera can provide you with video evidence of the crime, but physical security can make it much more difficult for a criminal to attack your property in the first place.

In 2015, take the time to speak to a security advisor and see what can be done to improve the physical security of your workplace. This can go a long way to making your property safer and more secure.
