Business Security 2016
We hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season and an enjoyable New Year’s Eve! Now that 2016 is here, many people have made New Year’s Resolutions. While a lot of these resolutions are typically focused on personal improvement, it’s also a good idea to think about improving your business security in 2016.
It’s a common misconception that security equipment is something that you set up once and then never think about again. This isn’t true. New security threats can appear and circumstances can change. In addition, there could be flaws with your current system that you didn’t consider when you first set it up. Looking at your property again with fresh eyes can help you spot these potential flaws and improve your security.
Here are some tips that could help you improve security at your business this year:
-
Look for weaknesses
- You may think that your property is secure, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t flaws. Look at your system. Is every entrance secured? Are there areas where criminals can hide? How is your lighting? Has your system grown with your business or lagged behind?
- Review everything and think like a criminal. If someone wanted to get into your property, how would they do it? Remember that criminals are not neat and they don’t care about your property. They are perfectly willing to smash and break whatever they can in order to get inside.
-
What can your cameras see?
- You may have security cameras installed, but are they capturing what you want them to capture? Many people assume that their cameras are providing them with good footage, but this isn’t always the case. Review your security camera set up. Are there any blind spots where criminals can act without cameras catching them?
- How is the lighting? Low-light conditions can make video quality unusable but very bright light can also cause problems. For example, if your camera is pointed at a street light or the sun, it could make it impossible to capture usable video.
-
Use physical security
- As mentioned, criminals will break property in order to access a location. This includes doors and windows. Most break-ins are what are called “smash and grab robberies.” This is exactly what it sounds like. Criminals smash through doors and windows in order to gain access to a location.
- In order to protect against these crimes, install physical security tools. These tools (such as security gates, folding gates, etc.) make it significantly more difficult to enter a property. In many cases, criminals completely avoid locations that have security gates installed since it’s not worth it to them to attempt a break-in.
- If you’re worried about how physical security will make your property look, think about using rolling or folding gates rather than static bars. These can be rolled or folded out of sight, maintaining the look and feel of your property while greatly improving security.
By reviewing your security systems and making necessary changes, you can significantly improve the security at your business and start 2016 off right.
